Brief :

Enhance the website's user interface and user experience while maintaining the existing content and structure predominantly intact.

Role :

At West, I was given the oppurtunity for the website overhaul as the sole UX designer initially, who led the design team by designing and managing the website UI and UX, collaborating with stakeholders, managers, developers etc for smooth execution of the end product.

Primary Goal

Uncover primary usability challenges across all pages, implement a revitalized visual design coupled with enhanced user experience (UX) and user interface (UI), and establish updated branding guidelines. Elevate the website's aesthetic appeal and functionality to enhance users' online shopping, research, and overall interaction, incorporating refinements and personalized touches.

Problems of Old West Website

Ideation

Initially, we contemplated implementing minor design changes to enhance the website's appearance. However, upon further consideration, we embraced the idea of a complete Brand Refresh to offer users a fresh experience with some updated UX elements. We were cautious about avoiding overwhelming users with drastic changes that might disrupt familiarity.

While acknowledging the pressing need for change, we also recognized the importance of catering to our existing audience, primarily comprising customers, researchers, scientists, and investors. Therefore, we decided to adopt a phased approach, ensuring that users accustomed to the current sitemap could adapt gradually to the evolving website experience.

Ideation

We initiated the website revamp by creating a theme for several pages.

To involve all West employees in the decision-making process, we conducted a successful poll. We distributed a voting link accompanied by a concise video outlining the reasons for the website revamp, highlighting the significant changes, and showcasing the exciting new features that accompany it.
Test Objective

Test Objectives:

  • Evaluate the efficacy of the updated Online shopping experience.
  • Investigate user search and discovery patterns within the service.
  • Identify and address potential frustrations and obstacles hindering task completion for users.
  • Assess the seamlessness of the mobile and tablet experiences.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the user interface (UI) in facilitating Call to Actions.
  • Analyze the website's navigational aspects to determine if users from various domains
    (e.g., scientists, researchers, companies, service and product seekers, shoppers) can accomplish their tasks efficiently.

Testers

Given that the website structure largely remained unchanged, I opted to bypass creating low fidelity wireframes. Instead, I delved into high fidelity wireframes, starting with the landing page. I generated a range of design options to ultimately settle on a cohesive theme.

Re - Branding

We've preserved West Branding's timeless colors, honoring decades of legacy. To infuse a fresh vibe, we introduced a palette of complementary hues, incorporated new patterns, and infused the brand with innovative design elements. Our revamp also includes a set of newly crafted icons, enhancing the overall visual appeal and modernizing the brand's identity.

Rebranding

Accessibility changes:

Designing for a diverse age range, from 18 and up, compelled me to ensure universal accessibility. Implementing standards such as W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and Google's "Accessibility for Teams," I focused on creating an inclusive experience. From font colors and styles to button colors and text size, every detail was crafted with user accessibility in mind..
